Vipps and MobilePay in restaurants — how to integrate payment?

For Norwegian restaurants, Vipps is not just a payment method — it's the standard. 4 out of 5 Norwegians use Vipps, and they expect it in the menu at the table. After Vipps and MobilePay merged in 2022, integration options have expanded. Here we look at three paths and which one fits best.

Short version: Vipps = MobilePay

Vipps and MobilePay merged in 2022 into Vipps MobilePay AS. In Norway they still use the "Vipps" brand. In Denmark and Finland it's "MobilePay". Under the hood it's the same app and infrastructure — meaning international payment platforms like Stripe can offer "MobilePay" as a payment method, and Norwegian customers see Vipps in return.

Option 1: Stripe with MobilePay

Simplest path for most restaurants. The restaurant creates a Stripe account, connects it to Flowder, customers get card or Vipps payment in Stripe Checkout. Payout to Norwegian bank next business day. No partner agreement needed. Price: 2.9 % + 3 NOK per transaction (2.4 % + 3 NOK for cards, similar for MobilePay). This is the default in Flowder.

Option 2: Vipps eCom (direct)

The restaurant can create an agreement directly with Vipps for eCom. Advantage: marginally lower price (typically 1.75 % + 1.75 NOK for POS-registered). Disadvantage: separate partner agreement and setup, card is not included (need separate card agreement alongside). Suitable for high-volume restaurants that can save on transaction fees.

Option 3: Vipps at table, card at till

For restaurants that want to avoid registering cards digitally: guest scans a "pay with Vipps" QR at the table triggering Vipps app flow directly. Card is paid at the traditional terminal at the till. Disadvantage: guest doesn't get a unified flow — they must pick payment method manually. We support this for special use models.

Our recommendation: Stripe + Vipps/MobilePay

For 95 % of Norwegian restaurants, Stripe with MobilePay integration is the right choice: one connection provides both card and Vipps, no negotiation with Vipps directly, no extra contracts. Price is marginally higher than direct Vipps agreement, but simplicity saves 5-10 hours of admin per month. Restaurants with digital-channel revenue over 500,000 NOK/mo should consider direct Vipps agreement.

How do you set it up in Flowder?

Under Restaurant settings click "Connect Stripe" → OAuth redirect to Stripe → follow 3 screens (org.nr, bank account, id verification) → back to Flowder with green "Active" badge. From that moment, guests see Vipps and card as payment options in the menu. Take-away and delivery require prepayment; dine-in at tables can choose prepayment or waiter settlement.
